Music
Statement of Intent
Our music curriculum at Carrant Brook inspires self-expression, creativity and confidence (We are inspired, We are confident). Through a coherent and sequenced curriculum based on the Model Music Curriculum (We are aspirational) that develops the musical knowledge and skills of our pupils, we hope to foster a love of music in all its different forms that crosses the boundaries of culture, ability and generations (We are caring).
We will achieve this by providing a wide range of musical experiences where children have the opportunity to listen and respond to different music genres, finding their voices as singers and performers, develop their own skills as a composer and increase their knowledge of composers. Pupils at Carrant Brook will also experience learning a musical instrument.
Through the framework of the National Curriculum 2014, the aim for music is that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- Learn to sing and use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions; pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
The school adopts a creative curriculum and where possible, music teaching as well as performance will be included. Where this is not possible, music is taught discretely.
